Perhaps what you meant was that there is an increase in criminally present aliens who have not also been charged with additional crimes. Lack of understanding about US immigration law is the primary cause of much of the unfounded hysterics of the self-proclaimed "Anti-ICE" crowd. The state comptroller and Metro's own auditors found no fraud in how the Assessor's office reached these numbers, and that is precisely the problem worth naming. This did not happen because someone cheated. It happened because the reappraisal and rate system, as currently built, has no mechanism to phase in an increase of this size for any property, commercial or residential.
Nashville does not need a scandal to justify reform. It needs a circuit breaker or phase-in cap on year-over-year assessed value increases, so that a legitimate market swing does not become an existential threat to an established local business overnight. If the Metropolitan Council will not act after this hearing, it should explain why not.
